Mick Young Scholarship Trust

Chairman's statement

"Mick Young was an exceptional man. From humble beginnings, he rose through the ranks of the Australian Labor Party to become its National Secretary. He was promoted within the Hawke Labor Government and became a key member of the Cabinet.
Mick was an exception to the rule and prospered through audacious talent and personality despite a lack of formal qualifications.
Mick knew that access to education was the essential key to unlocking opportunity for people. In his lifetime, he set up a scholarship scheme in his local electorate of Port Adelaide to provide financially disadvantaged people with the means to pursue their objectives through vocational education. The Mick Young Scholarship Trust was established in 1997, after Mick’s death, to emulate his example and to honour his memory.
Since its establishment, the Trust has helped many hundreds of financially disadvantaged people to further their education and thereby improve their lot in life. People who, without the hand up provided by the Trust, simply wouldn’t be in a position to undertake further study and improve their prospects. With course fees at universities, TAFE and colleges continuing to increase, sadly more and more people are being denied access to further educational opportunities and hence the work of the Trust is brought into ever sharper relief.
With your help and support the Trust can continue to make a difference to the lives of ordinary Australians. People who more than most deserve a “ fair go”."
